Yoga for men?

Men always practiced yoga. Only recently it became more popular among women then men. Possibly, because men are more inclined to do the competitive sports. There is no competition in yoga. Also, men can feel uneasy in the yoga class when women are more flexible and can do most poses without much effort. Many guys get turned off by the effort that it takes to make it through the beginning phases of yoga. After the first yoga class many of guys say, “man, I suck at this stuff“ and they just don’t continue and break through the “initiation phase”. Our problem is us that since we were brought up in competitive athletic environments we usually hate sucking at things!

Historically, at least as many men practiced yoga as women. I suspect that in the beginning it was also used by ancient Hindu warriors. The proof for that it’s not just in the names of the postures: Virabhadrasana I, II & III (warrior poses I, II & III), but also in the fact that similar poses or stances can be found in martial arts. The best example would be a front stance, which is universal in all martial arts. So gentlemen, picture yourself as old warriors going back to your roots.
